PM's praise for paper's stance

Tony Blair has praised the Newham Recorder's bid to improve community safety and reduce the fear of crime.

In a face-to-face meeting with local MP Tony Banks at Number 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister heard how residents are becoming increasingly concerned about the level of gun crime, murders, drugs and prostitution in the area.

The MP also handed over copies of the Recorder which highlighted the fears of the Newham community.

Tony said: "Mr Blair agreed to see me about the amount of anti-social behaviour in our community. He congratulated the Recorder on the part it is playing in highlighting local fears and those who are speaking out.

"I gave him copies of the paper and copies of letters from those of my constituents who have pleaded for action.

"Mr Blair wants to assure local people and the Recorder that dealing with issues of this magnitude are a top priority for the Government.

"I felt it was an important meeting and one that the Prime Minister intents to take action on. He has taken away the Recorder's reports and letters from local people to look at them in detail.

"I came away convinced that action will be taken."
