Early success for tribute 'field'

The Portsmouth News has announced moves to create a living floral display on Southsea sea front to pay tribute to cancer victims and bring comfort to the family and friends they left behind.

It will work in conjunction with Marie Curie Cancer Care to mark 100 years since the pioneering scientist won her first Nobel Prize for work with radium and radioactivity.

Readers have been asked to pledge their support by filling in a coupon to have daffodils planted in memory of a loved one - and give a donation to the Field of Hope.

The first daffodils were planted this weekend and the early response from readers has brought in a clutch of donations with 50 forms returned in the first few days.

The aim is to have every bulb sponsored before they flower in the spring.

Money raised will go to fund Marie Curie nurses who help care for those dying of cancer.
