Elwyn Edwards, deputy editor at the Rhyl Journal, has retired after 48 years in journalism.

Edwards (right) began his career with the North Wales Pioneer back in 1955 and after a spell of National Service joined the North Wales Newspapers-owned Rhyl Journal in 1965.

He progressed to deputy editor with special responsibilities for features for the Journal and sister titles the North Wales Pioneer and Denbighshire Free Press.

His retirement was marked with a party for over 100 people attended by former colleagues.

Steve Rogers, editor of the company's coastal titles said Elwyn's contribution to the success of the Journal was immeasurable.

He said: "He has been a tower of strength, not just to the title, but to all the journalists who have passed through the Journal's door. Readers trusted and respected him, which is vital for a newspaper serving the community."

The new deputy editor of the Rhyl Journal is Diane Ashton (right), for the past 15 years the title's chief reporter. She joined the Journal in 1986, having worked previously at the Warrington Guardian series.
