Former News staff are reunited

More than 60 former Cambridge Evening News staff have been reunited - many for the first time in more than 20 years.

Staff who worked at the newspaper's former offices in Newmarket Road, where the newspaper was based from 1963-89, gathered for the reunion at their old haunt, the Burleigh Arms pub.

The event, which was organised by former compositor Graham Smith, attracted a host of former staff from across the paper, from journalists and photographers to staff from the comp room and the machine room.

It followed a similar event last year, and there were a number of new faces this time around.

Graham said: "It was a close knit community at Newmarket Road and lots of us have kept in touch, but we thought it was about time we had a proper reunion."

He tracked down many of the guests through the electoral register, as well as by word of mouth and making an appeal through HoldtheFrontPage.

Graham said: "We even managed to track down Tony Durham, who was the managing director in 1963 and is in his 80s now.

"People were still ringing up the day before to ask if they could come along and we had people travel from as far away as Scotland, Gloucestershire and Reading.

"It was a good night and the evening went very quickly.

"We're hoping to make this a regular event and may organise another one in six months time."
