Tributes pour in to News & Star

Tributes to 10-month-old Hassan Martin, who was killed in a stabbing at a Carlisle baker's shop last week, have been pouring in to the News & Star.

The newspaper opened a book of condolence at its Bank Street offices in the city centre and since then hundreds of readers touched by the tragic death have gathered to sign the book.

Those unable to visit in person have also been calling the paper or using an online book of condolence on its website, and the messages will be presented to Hassan's mother.

News & Star deputy editor Nick Turner said: "The feeling here is that everyone has been affected by this terrible thing that has happened.

"Carlisle is a close-knit community. Lots of people have a connection to the family and there was a need for that communal grief to have a focus.

"We also felt it was poignant that the picture everyone has seen of Hassan is one taken for our bonny baby competition which was published just a couple of weeks ago.

"We've had a steady stream of people signing the book, from big burly builders bursting into tears, the mayor, police and people from the shop where it happened."

The News & Star has also set up a memorial fund in Hassan's name. The money will be split between a local hospice and the NSPCC - charities nominated by his mother.
