A former editor of the Jersey Evening Post has become a Lieutenant-Bailiff of the Royal Court.

Mike Rumfitt has been a Jurat - a lay member of the judiciary - since November 1991, and now as a Lieut-Bailiff has taken up one of the most senior positions in Jersey's unique court system.

The two Lieut-Bailiffs are the two most senior Jurats who preside over the Royal Court in the absence of the Bailiff - the most senior judge - or his deputy.

Mike was congratulated on his new appointment by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, who paid tribute to his work as president of the Prison Board of Visitors.

Sir Philip spoke of the varied experience and skills which Jurats brought to the bench and of Mike's long career in journalism, which ended as editor of the Jersey Evening Post.

Mike's appointment follows the retirement of Jurat Mazel Le Ruez.
