Major printworks investment by Newsquest

Newsquest has announced a major printworks investment to improve quality and reduce running costs at its Worcester plant.

The development, which adds to its current capacity, will

  • improve printing speed;
  • give better colour and more colour options;
  • allow higher pagination.

    Two new colour towers are being installed to add to the printing units already in operation.

    Production manager at Newsquest (Midlands South) Paul Wesley said: "We'll be able to offer more colour and larger newspapers.

    "We will also be gaining additional benefits of improved print quality and lower running costs, particularly when related to waste.

    "It's a major investment involving a considerable sum of money."

    The plant produces the Worcester Evening News, as well as weekly papers including Berrow's Worcester Journal, the Hereford Times, Kidderminster Shuttle, Evesham Journal, Bromsgrove Messenger and other local newspapers.

    Paul said: "We also contract external work and will be able to produce more and bigger papers with more colour in them."

    For the technically-minded, the existing Goss Metro press will be expanded with the introduction of two new shaftless Goss Colorliner 70 four-high towers. The refurbishment will involve new plate and blanket cylinders as well as replacing the existing rotary folders with jaw folders.

    It will use a digital inking system to maximise pre-setting accuracy and density stability - which will be the major contributor to cutting down on waste.
