Mercury helps to create footballing history

The Leicester Mercury is helping to create footballing history by co-organising a football match dedicated to fallen war heroes.

The Premiership clash between Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, November 2, will be the first game to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Both sets of players will wear specially designed shirts embroidered with a single poppy, and at half-time Leicestershire veterans of conflicts from the Second World War to the present day will parade in the Walkers Stadium.

Collections will also be held throughout the game and the commemorative shirts will be auctioned off.

The event is a direct result of the Mercury's unique relationship with Leicester City, as the club's official media partner, and both have joined forces with the Royal British Legion.

Kay Drummond, deputy editor of the Leicester Mercury, said: "The Mercury has provided vigorous support to the work of the Royal British Legion for decades and we are delighted this year to move that support on to an exciting new level.

"We're very excited about it - and we're sure that other clubs will now follow Leicester's lead."
