Film society put in the picture thanks to news group grant

A £5,000 grant was awarded to The Friendly Film Society in York after they made a request to the Gannett Foundation to enable them to buy a new projector.

The Foundation is the charitable arm of the American owners of Newsquest, which, in turn, owns the York Evening Press.

Film society treasurer Kathy Ransome said: "It is brilliant. We have already used the new projector once, my husband is the projectionist and he said the pictures are very clear and precise. It is more portable as well.

"Raising £5,000 ourselves would have taken such a long time. We feel really privileged to have got this grant and are very grateful."

Gannett's contributions nationwide aim to improve the quality of life and address the most pressing community issues.
