Sister papers produce extra pages to mark historic day

Two Westcountry newspapers have produced special supplements to mark the biggest royal occasion since last year's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The Western Morning News and Plymouth Evening Herald both commemorated the Queen's visit to Plymouth to present a new Colour to the Royal Navy with pull-out sections.

The WMN printed two 24-page supplements - a preview of the event on July 23 and a souvenir review the following day.

Six reporters and ten photographers made up the WMN's editorial team for the paper's coverage of the event.

A total of 70 photographs were used in the two publications as well as front page splashes for both editions.

The WMN described the Colour as a "potent symbol of the spirit of the service, its loyalty to the Crown and a remembrance of lives lost in battle".

A comment article told readers: "For Plymouth to host this important event, for the first time in almost a century, reaffirms the city's role as a vital naval base."

The paper also summed up the significance of the occasion, saying the presentation of the Colour was something that would not be witnessed again for at least 25 years.

The Plymouth Evening Herald's coverage included a 16-page supplement commemorating the day's events which contained seven articles and more than 60 pictures.

A team of seven reporters and ten photographers covered the occasion for the paper.
