Maritime adventure for sub

A sub-editor on the Ipswich Advertiser has returned to dry land after winning a 100-mile Army sea race.

Lisa Dixon, (right), who is also a soldier in the Territorial Army, competed in a crew of six in the two-week long Exercise Mercurial Diamond race.

The team had to race their 33ft-long yacht in a 'round the can' race - around buoys and through the night.

After three days of training in Kiel, Germany, the competitors set sail for Arhus, Denmark via Sonderborg, Middelfart and Horsens.

Lisa, (26), who had only been on a sailing boat once before, said: "I was still trying to master all the terminology of what the different ropes do and what their correct names are.

"The racing was exciting and at times a bit stressful, due to the sheer chaos on board, as everyone is shouting instructions and running around trying to do three things at once. Still, the sun kept shining and everyone pulled their weight.

"It was a good team building exercise despite the minor arguments on board which are unavoidable when six people are living in close proximity for two weeks."

Lisa's TA team competed against six regular army teams in the event, and is pictured below with the crew.

Their reward for finishing first was a telescope for the regiment and an engraved glass each.

  • Lisa's job in the TA involves her working on Thursday evenings and at weekends in addition to her time at the Advertiser.
