Former journalist will be public face of Bury Council

An former regional journalist has become the first in-house press officer of Bury Metropolitan Borough Council.

Neil Sterio, (39), from Port Talbot, has previously worked on several titles in the South Wales area including the South Wales Echo, the Neath and Port Talbot Guardian titles and the Llanelli Star.

Neil left his position as York Council's press manager, where he has worked since 1998, to take up the new job.

During his time at York, Neil was lauded by the local media for his contribution to the city's flood relief operation in November 2000.

His work also recognised in an IPR Cream team award for best crisis management communications.

Neil said: "I'm looking forward to providing a dedicated, in-house press office service for the authority and the media, building on the reputation I earned at York.

"This is a rapidly improving council but we need to be more confident about celebrating its successes and our communications needs to get smarter."

Jason Crausby, Head of Communications and Partnerships for Bury Metro Council, said: "There was an enormous amount of interest in the post and Neil's previous experience and enthusiasm made him the ideal candidate."
