Top ranking Royal Marine officers have presented a long-awaited symbol of courage and bravery to a war veteran, thanks to the Droitwich Spa Advertiser.

Ex-Marine William Sparks, (83), has received a coveted white beret to honour his services during the Second World War on Russian convoy duty.

The presentation was made after the newspaper featured a story about William's dream of owning a white beret.

William has waited for more than half a century to receive the reward for patriotic service - available only to those who served on the treacherous voyages to help the Russian Allies.

During the presentation, William handed over his impressive collection of war photographs, which will now become part of the Royal Marine Museum in Portsmouth, where they will be safeguarded for future generations.

He served for 12 years across the globe, predominantly on HMS Liverpool, a ship which was to become his second home.

Advertiser editor Alan Wallcroft said he was delighted to the Marines for the wonderful way in which they have assisted, adding: "We are delighted to have helped Bill to get his beret, he certainly earned it."
