A charity is hoping to help launch a graduate into his chosen career as a specialist environmental journalist by sponsoring a conservation trip to Australia, followed by a three-month placement at a Sri Lanka newspaper.
The Burton Breweries Charitable Trust put forward a grant of £4,500 for Paul Jones to get a good start on the career ladder.


Scotsman sports writer Alan Pattullo's revealing interview with former Dundee United manager Jim McLean has won him the Jim Rodger Memorial Award for the best young sports journalist in Scotland.
The award was set up five years ago in memory of journalist Jim Rodger and is open to sports journalists aged under 35 working in the Scottish regional press.


MPs have used stories from the Nottingham Evening Post as evidence of a problem with anti-social behaviour among young people.
A parliamentary select committee discussing the Anti-Social Behaviour Bill heard from a Notts MP who praised the paper's coverage. The Bill is due to pass to the House of Lords next month.


A team from the Ilford Recorder took part in the Barking and Dagenham Five Mile Race for the paper's MacMillan Building for Life Appeal, which is raising money for a £1m specialist cancer unit.
Editor Chris Carter led a team of 14, which raised around £1,500.


The Essex Chronicle is being credited with helping the county boost its recycling, with residents meeting Government targets.
The paper's campaign highlighted the importance of recycling waste, and strategic waste manager David Tuthill said its campaign had been "accurate and positive and just the kind of thing we need more of".


The Portsmouth News is relaunching its Stop the Grot campaign - by popular demand.
So far more than 65 dumping grounds have been cleared since the initiative began two years ago, and the paper is asking people to identify more problem areas for action.
