New editor appointed at Scarborough title

Ed Asquith is to become the new editor of the Scarborough Evening News.

Currently editorial director of the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group, he will join the Scarborough title on June 30.

He takes over from Paul Napier, who was appointed editor of the Hartlepool Mail last month.

Ed, (44), has been editor of the Wakefield Express and editorial director of the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group for the past five years - a role which has also seen him take responsibility for 11 paid-for and seven free titles, including the Morley Advertiser, Ossett & Horbury Observer and Pontefract & Castleford Express.

Before moving to Wakefield, Ed had also edited the Whitby Gazette.

His new role will see him returning to familiar territory, as he was previously deputy editor of the Scarborough Evening News.

He said: "I'm hoping the move to a daily paper will go smoothly, having had experience on a variety of papers and being familiar with the Scarborough title.

"The circulation of the Wakefield Express is now over 34,000, the highest it has been for 22 years, and I will be looking at what can be done to increase the circulation of the Evening News with the help of the team there."

In addition to editing the Evening News, Ed will also be editorial director of Yorkshire Regional Newspapers, with responsibility for seven paid-for weeklies, three free weeklies and seven websites.

Ed has previously edited the Bromsgrove Messenger series, worked as a sub at the Birmingham Evening mail and South Wales Echo, and a reporter on the Coventry Evening Telegraph.
