Journalists due to start "indefinite" strike in Bradford

Pay talks between management and staff at Newsquest Bradford have failed to reach a conclusion - and the journalists taking industrial action are due to start an "indefinite" strike at midnight on Sunday.

The company says publication of its titles will not be disrupted by further strike action.

The National Union of Journalists wants a better pay deal than the one on offer from Newsquest.

But David Coates, managing director of Newsquest Bradford, said: "We are not concerned about this latest action.

"The majority of our editorial staff are working normally and continuing to produce superb newspapers.

"We are continuing our dialogue with national officials in an attempt to resolve the dispute and we are hopeful that they will realise that the pay formula we have put forward is a very fair and reasonable offer."

NUJ members at the Telegraph & Argus, Keighley News, Ilkley Gazette, Craven Herald and Wharfedale Observer have taken part in 31 days of strike action so far this year, most recently on May 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, union members at the Bolton Evening News, Bolton Journal, Bury Times, Bury Journal, Leigh Journal and Prestwich & Whitefield Guide began their current walkout on April 22, following two earlier two-day stoppages in April, and say they plan to strike "until further notice".

Talks there are continuing.
