New strike days planned to hit local elections

National Union of Journalists members at Newsquest in Bradford have named two new strike dates - as their latest round of industrial action over pay comes to an end.

Members at the Telegraph & Argus, Keighley News, Ilkley Gazette, Craven Herald and Wharfedale Observer say they plan to walk out again on Thursday and Friday May 1 and 2, to coincide with local council elections.

They are currently taking part in a 12-day stoppage, which began on April 16 and is due to end on April 27.

The union says a new pay offer from management, made in writing, has been rejected, but that discussions between the two sides are on-going.

This week NUJ members at the Bolton Evening News, Bolton Journal, Bury Times, Bury Journal, Leigh Journal, Prestwich & Whitefield Guide and the Radcliffe Times have also been taking part in a strike over pay, which is due to go on "until further notice".

NUJ regional organiser Miles Barter said: "Talks are continuing at both centres, which is a good sign, and we are optimistic that we can come to a solution soon."

No one was available for comment from Newsquest Bradford.
