Sale of Welsh newspaper under discussion

Northcliffe Newspapers is setting up a deal to buy the Neath and Port Talbot Tribune from Tindle Newspapers.

The competition minister has been asked to rubber-stamp the deal, which would not need to be referred to the Competition Commission because of the papers' circulation.

Northcliffe already owns the Neath and Port Talbot Courier, which is published by South West Wales Publications.

The Tribune is a monthly free sheet which Northcliffe hopes will complement its existing South Wales portfolio.

Third parties are being asked to send their views to the department of Trade and Industry before a decision is made.

In coming to a decision the Secretary of State will look at competition, concentration of ownership, efficiency and employment, as well as the need for accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion.
