New Courier editor to work for 'even greater success'

John Furbisher is to become the new editor at the Halifax Evening Courier.

Currently acting editor at the Yorkshire Post, he will join the Courier this summer.

He will succeed Edward Riley, who is retiring after 15 years in the editor's chair.

John, (pictured), said: "I am thrilled and honoured to accept the editorship of the Evening Courier.

"Living in Calderdale, I know how much this newspaper is part of the fabric of the community and how much it is valued by the people who live and work here.

"The Courier has a highly talented team of journalists and I am looking forward to working alongside them and guiding them to even greater success."

John, (43), has worked at the Yorkshire Post since 1993, having previously worked there in the late 1980s when he was named Campaigning Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards.

Since returning he has held several senior posts at the paper including chief reporter, assistant editor (news), and head of content.

He became deputy editor in October last year and has been acting editor at the paper for the past three months.

He has also previously worked for the Halifax Evening Courier, beginning his journalism career with the Wakefield Express Group in 1980 before joining the Courier in the mid eighties, when Edward was deputy editor.

He also worked for a time on the nationals, as a northern correspondent and then reporter on the Sunday Times.
