Dan Mason, publisher of the Birmingham Post, has left the company with immediate effect.

He had been publisher of the Trinity Mirror title for the past three years, and will now pursue other interests.

Birmingham Post & Mail managing director Alistair Nee said it was with regret that he made the announcement, and he wished Dan every future success.

He said: "Throughout his time with the Post, Dan has been a passionate advocate of the title, both inside and outside the business.

"He has worked tirelessly to promote and enhance the Post brand, particularly among the West Midlands business community where his active and high-profile involvement has earned him a fine reputation.

"On behalf of Birmingham Post & Mail Ltd, I would like to record my thanks to Dan for his work with the company and to wish him every success for the future."

Dan has a long history with Trinity Mirror's West Midlands titles, having joined the Birmingham Post & Mail as head of joint features in 1987.

Since then he has undertaken a number of key editorial roles within the business, including deputy editor of the Birmingham Evening Mail.

In 1993 he was appointed editor of the Coventry Evening Telegraph, and in 1998 he became acting managing director - a post which was confirmed in May 1999.

He became publisher for the Birmingham Post in December 1999.

Trinity Mirror has now begun its search for Dan's successor, and in the interim, Roger Borrell, Midlands editor-in-chief and editor of the Evening Mail, will assume overall editorial responsibility for both daily titles.
