Guardian team prove they're on the ball

A triumphant team from the Cornish Guardian walked away with the winners' cup at a Five-A-Side football tournament in aid of its Centenary Appeal.

The highly competitive event saw local teams, including staff from BBC Cornwall and the Western Morning News, compete against each other in a round-robin format.

And Cornish Guardian journalists Ben Glass, Alan Barber and Jimmy Shapland emerged victorious in the competition, with help from Newquay police officer Shane Easterbrook, Nick Vincent of Fitzgerald Lighting and Joe Warwick of Imerys, who had to retire through injury.

  • The Western Morning News narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a goal from Ben gave the Guardian a 1-0 win in the final group game.

Meanwhile the BBC stormed into the final with an impressive 10 points, but found they were no match for the Guardian team.

Jimmy fired in a goal to claim an early lead, and the BBC found it impossible to break down the defence of deputy chief reporter Alan.

All the money raised from the event will go towards the paper's appeal to raise £30,000 for a sleep monitor for the Royal Cornall Hospital at Tresliske.

Newquay reporter Jimmy said: "It was a really great event, and we really do appreciate that so many people gave up their Sunday morning to support our appeal."

  • The tournament is the latest in a succession of fund-raising initiatives in aid of the Centenary Appeal.

In the past few months staff from the Cornish Guardian have taken part in the annual sponsored FLEET cycle ride, a gig race, and a local music festival, and a bigger football tournament is planned for the summer.
