Major changes to 133-year-old weekly

One of Scotland's oldest weekly newspapers is about to undergo the biggest changes in its history.

The 133-year-old Galloway Gazette will change from broadsheet to tabloid format next week.

And at the same time, colour is being introduced to the newspaper, which has a 7,000-plus circulation.

The move away from broadsheet is in response to demand from readers and advertisers, and follows considerable investment in the business from parent company Scottish Radio Holdings.

The new format paper will continue to maintain its strong local news and community news coverage and will remain a campaigning newspaper, continuing to champion local causes as it has in the past.

Editor Peter Jeal said the changes, along with recent investment in equipment and facilities, would allow the business to grow, creating firm foundations for the future.

He added: "Since coming to the Gazette three years ago, the format size has been an issue with our readers.

"Many find it cumbersome and have consistently asked us to reduce the format of the paper to make it easier to read.

"We are delighted to be able to now do this."
