Race named after Gerry in 'Big Five-O' tribute

News of South Wales Argus editor Gerry Keighley's 50th birthday spread to a wider audience than he could have imagined.

Argus colleagues treated Gerry to a day of surprises and celebrations to mark his half-century.

But when management at Chepstow racecourse - a venue Gerry has been known to frequent from time to time - heard about the landmark birthday they decided to celebrate it in novel fashion.

So when Gerry studied the Chepstow racecard for the February 4 meeting - a week after his birthday - he discovered the 1.30pm race had been dubbed the Gerry Keighley 'Big 50' Novices' Chase!

Managers invited Gerry to the meeting and he presented the prizes to the owner of No Need For Alarm, winner of "his" race.
