A Scottish journalist who became deputy editor of a leading Yorkshire newspaper has died at the age of 79.

Bill Jenkins began his journalism career on a weekly newspaper in Moray and on his retirement was deputy editor of the Scarborough Mercury.

He had also worked for the Press and Journal in Aberdeen as its Elgin and Aberdeen reporter.

In 1962 he and his wife Doreen moved south, and Bill joined the Scarborough Evening News as a reporter.

Later he became sports editor, before moving to the Evening News's sister paper, the Mercury, as deputy editor.

He retired in 1987 and had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

His funeral was held at Scarborough Crematorium.
