The Wiltshire Times is giving its backing to a local schoolgirl who is dreaming of singing in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Sixteen-year-old MiMi has reached the final eight in the battle to represent the UK at the contest in Latvia in May, and is currently fighting it out for one of four places in the televised final of A Song for Europe.

This week the final eight songs are being played on BBC Radio Two, and the Wiltshire Times is urging its readers to vote for MiMi.

The teenager beat 700 entrants to win a place in the final eight, singing Ever Since That Night, written by Simon May - who wrote the Easternders theme tune - and John Brant.

Editor Toby Granville said: "Wiltshire is proud to have its very own candidate in the bid to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest.

"We hope our readers will now do their bit to ensure the rest of Europe can enjoy her sparkling talent."

This week the entries are being played on Terry Wogan's and Ken Bruce's shows, and on Friday morning all eight songs will be played again before a phoneline is opened to allow listeners to vote for their favourite.

Four finalists will go through to compete on A Song For Europe on BBC One in March.
