Veteran journalist dies on holiday

Percy Roberts, a former reporter at The Argus in Brighton, who later became chairman of Mirror Group Newspapers, has died.

He had been on holiday in Africa where he had spent some of his career. He was 82.

Percy began his journalism career at The Argus and its sister paper the Sussex Daily News in the 1930s.

After serving with the Sussex Yeomanry during the Second World War, he worked for the Egyptian Mail in Cairo and the Mid-East Mail in Palestine.

He then returned to England to work at the Sussex Daily News and the Liverpool Daily Post and later became editor of the Nigerian Citizen and the Nigerian Daily Times.

During the 1960s he returned to Britain once again, working for various newspaper groups, eventually becoming chairman and chief executive of Mirror Group Newspapers.
