Gazette exposes security risk

The Colchester Evening Gazette has unveiled a potential security risk at Essex County Council.

In an exclusive front page story, the paper showed how the county council had placed sensitive security information about its buildings on its website.

The information about the county council's security procedures, which included the number of security cameras operated, how many staff are on duty at nights and the types of burglar alarms used, had been posted on the Internet.

Reporter Charlotte Potter explained how the information was included in a document meant for firms interested in bidding for a security contract with the county council.

When the Gazette discovered the potential risk it contacted the county council which removed the information from its website.

A spokesman for the county council said it had amended the website in the light of what the Gazette had discovered.

Essex Police described the move to remove the sensitive information as a "sensible step".
