400 attend funeral of former editor

The funeral of former Tenby Observer editor Arthur Ormand has been held.

Between 400 and 500 attended the service at St Mary's Church in Tenby, including veteran actor Kenneth Griffiths.

Arthur was a well-known member of the Tenby community and following his death, aged 80, an obituary paying tribute to a "genial character with a quick wit and dry humour", was published on page one of the Tenby Observer, where he worked for more than 50 years.

Arthur joined the Tenby Observer as a trainee reporter in 1939.

During World War Two her served in the RAF and on his return became the Observer's correspondent in Whitland.

In 1964 he was appointed editor and later managing editor when Tindle Newspapers became the owners.

In 1978 he was awarded the MBE in honour of his services to the newspaper industry, which included a period when he and his staff successfully fought to save the Tenby Observer from the brink of extinction.

He retired in 1989 after 50 years' loyal service with the paper, but had still continued to write for the paper until his death.

He had also been a long-serving member of the Guild of Editors, and served as its president in 1982-83.
