Fire delays the news

Extra copies of the Derby Evening Telegraph had to be printed when a delivery van taking them out to newsagents went up in flames.

Driver Anthony Baker said: "I went on to Burton Road and noticed flames at my feet and that smoke was pumping into the van."

He rang 999 on his mobile phone and firefighters arrived but could not save the newspapers or the van.

He, his wife and two-year-old daughter, who were also in the van, were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The reprinted copies of the newspapers, some 2,000 of the evening paper's 55,500 circulation, were dispatched with four couriers and were held up for just 90 minutes.
