The Portsmouth News has launched a campaign calling on festive drinkers to either leave their car behind before going out or appoint a designated driver who sticks to soft drinks.
Its Steer Clear campaign is being backed by pub chain Gales, which is offering a free soft drink to the nominated driver in a group of three or more between 6pm and 9pm in the Christmas period.


Readers of The Citizen in Gloucester have donated more than £900 to The Philippine Trust, a charity which supports three schools and a feeding programme for the families of Smokey Mountain in the Philippines.
Donations flooded in after readers were moved by the paper's story about Gloucester woman Jane Walker, who set up the charity to help thousands of children who live on a massive rubbish dump and among the rotting corpses of a huge cemetery.


Aberdeen Journals man Jim Stott has been presented with a long service award to mark his 30 years with the company.
A former case room worker, he now works in the company's computer department.
He received a Tissot watch from managing director Alan Scott, who said Jim's efforts were greatly appreciated.

More than 300 names were put forward and the hand-reared pups will now be known as Zascha and Chali.
