Union to debate its own future

The structure of the National Union of Journalists could be changed after a wide-ranging consultation that is taking place nation wide.

The union wants branches and chapels to give feedback on its resources and structures as part of the Building Our Collective Strength review.

They will be asked to comment on 700 pages of ideas, proposals a comments received during the first part of the exercise in a bid to divert more resources into activity and staffing.

Proposals include:

  • Reducing the size of the national executive;
  • Introducing an inflation-linked subs increase;
  • Creating new organiser jobs;
  • Reform of the annual delegate meeting.

    The general secretary Jeremy Dear is asking for all comments to reach him by January 1, with a final draft of the review to be presented to the NEC on January 17.

    The amended document will go to the delegate meeting in April for debate and endorsement.
