Staff pay up to release editor from the dungeons

The editor of the Colchester Evening Gazette spent a spooky night in the dungeons of the town's oldest building.

Irene Kettle was locked in the jail of Colchester Castle with other Colchester dignitaries to raise money for brain injury charity Headway.

Irene said: "It was a huge success. At one point we were taken off one by one and blindfolded and everyone looked a bit whiter after going through the vaults."

The event started with the 20-strong group being led on a ghost tour through the town.

They were then 'arrested' by the Town Watch and thrown in the vaults of the castle for a night - unless they bought their way to freedom.

Friends, including staff, donated £263 towards her freedom with Irene adding another £237 to the kitty to make £500 for the charity event.
