Illness brings out the strength in George

Features editor George Frew is facing up to life with inoperable lung cancer.

Instead of buckling under the news, George, of the Western Daily Press, has grown in stature in spite of the incredible blow.

Despite starting chemotherapy treatment, he has been at his desk to write about how he has responded to the "invader" inside his body.

Mike Lowe, editor of sister paper the Bristol Evening Post, wrote: "He has written with candour and, amazingly, with humour about his illness.

"He has written with bravery too.

"There's no pretence, no self-pity, only honesty.

"Nor is there bitterness, just a steely resolve to fight this disease for as long as he can.

"He wrote, he said, '…to offer a crumb of comfort or a speck of solace to anyone who finds themselves in this dark, hard place'.

"It takes someone very special to think of others at such a time."
