Tony's got the Blues

The successes and stories of 100 of Ipswich Town FC's greatest players have been archived for a new book by the chief sports writer of the East Anglian Daily Times.

Tony Garnett's book, 100 Greats, turns the spotlight on the best Blues footballers from the 1930s to the present day, dating back to the time of Jimmy McLuckie and the pioneers of professional football at the club.

There are insights into players from their Division One championship season in 1961/62, heroes from the FA Cup and UEFA Cup winning sides of 1978 and 1981 and favourites from the 1990s.

And as well as the usual look back at their playing days, the book reveals some hilarious antics, unruly behaviour and surprising stories about the players.

Photographs of each player and some dramatic action shots are also included.

Current players have been excluded from the 129-page book so the biographies will not go out of date, but there is a mention for club captain Matt Holland.

Tony has been reporting on the club for the EADT since 1958 and has watched more than 2,000 games under eight managers. In 2000 he wrote a best-selling history of Ipswich Town.

100 Greats is available from the EADT head office in Ipswich and most bookshops, priced £12.
