Region left reeling seeks hope from press

A region left reeling by news of more than 1,000 job losses - and maybe more to follow - is finding itself being backed to the hilt by its local newspaper.

The Northern Echo is calling for more aid to the region after Black & Decker announced the loss of 950 jobs and Weardale Steel closed, leaving 70 people without work. The fate of 1,000 workers at LG Philips is also under scrutiny.

Just two months ago cement firm Blue Circle closed with the loss of 147 jobs and a knock-on effect hitting many other firms.

The Echo's campaign Working for a Future is backing an official economic plan which has so far been signed up to by more than 50 organisations.

MPs, council leaders and other key community members have also pledged to support the newspaper campaign.

Editor Peter Barron said: "The Black & Decker announcement was devastating news, particularly for Spennymoor but also for the wider region.

"Coming on top of the Blue Circle closure in Weardale, plus the Weardale Steel job losses announced last week, it is becoming increasingly clear that communities in our region need widespread support.

"The Northern Echo wishes to play its part in trying to provide practical support through publicity for new businesses, community initiatives and the job-seekers themselves."
