Burglar pleads "guilty" after paper's mugshot plea

Readers of The Argus helped bring a burglar to justice after the paper featured his picture on its front page and its Internet site when police revealed he was a wanted man.

He was among three "most wanted" suspects featured and less than a week later was before Brighton magistrates to plead guilty to burglary.

Three days after publication, a reader tipped off the police and the suspect was arrested before admitting burgling a design company's offices. He admitted a further break in at the same office at a previous hearing, and asked for five similar offences to be taken into consideration.

It was only after making numerous inquiries without success that the police turned to The Argus.

Chief Inspector Peter Mills said after the hearing: "I am extremely grateful for the number of calls I have had from the public.

"Due to the response we have received from readers of The Argus we will be looking to do the same thing again."
