Big hearted readers of the Kentish Times series have sent in hundreds of pounds to pay for a kitten's operation.

Two weeks ago the Bexley and Bromley editions of the south east London paper ran a story about a black kitten who was born with his legs back to front.

The owner of the sanctuary which cares for the cat, named Willy Wonka, said he needed to raise £2,000 for Willy's veterinary care.

And shortly after the story was published Kentish Times readers began sending in cash and the money is still pouring in.

Grateful Willy (with some help from his carer) has now written to the Kentish Times to say thank you.

Group editor Melody Ryall said: "We have been overwhelmed with letters and donations wishing Willy all the best with his operation.

"This proves our readers really are the greatest. They've been just purrfect!"
