News in brief

Daily record editor Peter Cox and journalist Bob Shields are to run this year's New York Marathon.
On November 3 the pair will set off from New York's Staten Island and attempt to cross the finishing line of the city's marathon in Central Park in aid of the paper's Save Our Kids appeal.
The Record is aiming to raise money to build five centres in Scotland where bullied and frightened children can turn for professional help.

The Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough, has teamed up with Barclaycard as part of the Tees Pride campaign to provide a cash boost of £25,000 for local charities, community groups and needy schools on Teeside.
Evening Gazette editor Steve Dyson said: "Tees Pride has made its mark as a campaign that shouts long and loud about the good things in the region, as well as wanting to push forward positive change."

The Aberdeen Evening Express has won a major victory in its battle against dog dirt with the news that the city council is to spend £5,000 installing a string of dog waste bins.
The move comes after the paper's Ditch the Dirt campaign highlighted a shortage of the bins.
It has also been naming and shaming people who have not cleaning up after their pets and reporters and photographers from the paper have also been patrolling streets and public parks flagging up any mess they find with special Ditch the Dirt markers.

The Bath Chronicle has stepped up its campaign to ban lorries using the city as a through route with the launch of a petition which will be handed to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.
The No Through Route Campaign calls for weight restrictions to be imposed in the city and cut noise and environmental damage.
The petition is available to sign at the Chronicle's offices in Westgate Street and Windsor Bridge Road and an online version is also available at www.bathchronicle.co.uk.

The Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can… Cancer Research Appeal has smashed through the £750,000 after a £150,000 boost from a local company.
Sovereign Health Care pledged to match all money raised by the local community pound-for-pound.
The appeal has a target of £1m, which will be spent on pioneering research into anti-cancer drugs at the University of Bradford's Cancer Research Unit.
Once the appeal total is reached it will trigger a £5m investment by Cancer Research UK into research into the disease in Bradford.
