£4m newspaper office plans unveiled

Cornwall and Devon Media Ltd has unveiled plans for a new £4m headquarters.

The company, which produces the Cornish Guardian, the Cornishman, the West Briton and is part of the Northcliffe Group, is seeking planning permission for the proposed three-storey office complex to be built alongside Truro River.

It has been based at Lemon Quay in Truro city centre since the 1950s but managing director Tony Hazell said the firm's current premises were out of date.

He said: "We have been at Harmsworth House since the 1950s and have changed from a semi-industrial environment in the days of hot metal and printing presses to a fully computerised office. Our offices are too cramped to meet modern requirements. We would be moving to a purpose-built office complex."

The new offices would house about 150 staff with a capacity of 190.

Tony added: "Cornwall and Devon Media employs a record number of people in Truro and its management believes this growth will continue, but only if accommodation, IT and communication difficulties are resolved."

A separate planning application has been submitted to partly demolish Harmsworth House and create a retail and leisure area.
