James Fuller, of the Cambridge Evening News, this week secured the first in-depth newspaper interview with the father of murdered schoolgirl Holly Wells in which he described the family's "five weeks of hell" since she first went missing.
District reporter James is a friend of the Wells family and plays cricket in the same local team as Kevin Wells - and he agreed to the exclusive, which was followed up by The Sun and other national press.
The moving interview described how the families had endured "the darkest days" of their lives, desperate in their loss.
He told James: "We are bracing ourselves for further media attention and preparing for the fact that some information to be revealed will be less than favourable.
"That's going to be shared as a family, though, and we will be looking to be supportive of each other."
Journalists working on the story have been sent out questionnaires by Cambridgeshire police reminding them to hand over any information that could prove useful to their inquiries. Many reporters had interviewed the two people who have been charged in connection with the girls' murder.
The Evening News' James Fuller will himself be questioned by police after approaching Ian Huntley, who has since been charged with the murders, and conducting an interview with him.
The police questionnaire comes with a warning that officers may seek a court order if necessary.
It also asks if friends or relatives of people involved in the case have been signed up for future stories.
