Cornish journalist Welby Davey, who worked at The West Briton for more than 40 years, has died aged 90.

He began his journalism career at the newspaper straight from school, starting out as a junior reporter.

He later became a senior sub-editor and art editor.

A life-long member of the National Union of Journalists, he retired in 1977 aged 65.

At the outbreak of war in 1939 he joined the Heavy Artillery regiment of the Royal Artillery, having already served in the Territorial Army, and served throughout the long siege of Malta.

At the end of war he left the Army with the rank of lieutenant and returned to The West Briton and his TA service.

He later received the TA decoration with three long-service bars, having served for 35 years, retiring with the rank of major. In 1957 he received the MBE from the Queen.
