Evening Post editor named

Spencer Feeney has been named the new editor of the South Wales Evening Post.

Currently editor of The Citizen in Gloucester, Spencer will take over from the Post's current editor, George Edwards, when he retires in October.

It will be a return home for Spencer, (51), who was born and raised in Waunarlwydd, Swansea, where his parents still live.

Spencer began his career as a trainee reporter with the South Wales Evening Post in 1969 and went on to work in Portsmouth and on the Birmingham Evening Mail before returning to the Evening Post as a sports sub editor/reporter where his speciality was covering boxing.

He was editor of the Llanelli Star from 1987 to 1991 before becoming assistant editor at the The Sentinel in Stoke-on-Trent and later deputy editor with the Exeter Express and Echo.

He became editor of The Citizen in 1995.

He said: "It's a great privilege to have the opportunity to edit my hometown newspaper.

"The Evening Post has a proud record of community involvement and I am looking forward to help build on that tradition."

George, (60), started his career as a trainee reporter with the Derby Evening Telegraph, and also worked there as a sports reporter and sports editor before being appointed assistant editor.

In 1983 he joined the South Wales Evening Post as deputy editor and took over as editor in 1996.

George said: "Retiring will, in many respects, be a wrench.

"The job brings its trials and tribulations but they are far outweighed by the rewards."
