After months of campaigning by the Northern Echo for improvements to be made to crumbling road crash barriers on railway bridges, a £1.5m project on a bridge which provides a key traffic link has been announced.
The Echo began the campaign following the Selby rail disaster when it found that the majority of approaches to road-over-rail bridges in the North-East and North Yorkshire have inadequate protection for motorists.


A vital step was taken in a campaign to provide the people of Norfolk and Suffolk with their own cardiac centre when the Eastern Daily Press delivered a dossier to 10 Downing Street.
As part of the paper's Have a Heart campaign, EDP staff were at Westminster to hand deliver the dossier - a document containing every story told by heart patients and their relatives since the campaign was launched last month.


Following Bristol City Council's announcement that the city is entering the competition to become Britain's Cleanest City 2003, the Evening Post has declared a war on litter.
Readers are being urged to contact the paper if they know of an area that is being ruined by rubbish. The City Council hopes that the title of Britain's Cleanest City 2003 would boost its bid for Capital of Culture 2008.

One of Cornwall's local surfing heroes has been recognised with a new trophy at the end of the Rip Curl Newquay Boardmasters contest.
