Peevers breaks the 10km barrier

Bristol Evening Post reporter Simon Peevers has finally managed to break the 10km barrier in his build-up to the BUPA Bristol Half Marathon.

And it was all thanks to his new training regime - based on Gazza's infamous diet of eating kebabs and drinking lager!

After managing to run only half the distance in a previous 10km race in July, Simon admitted in the Evening Post that his training had "taken a bit of a back seat lately" as less important and far less strenuous activities became more attractive.

It was no surprise then, that going into the British Golden Jubilee 10km road race, Simon was not very optimistic.

He said: "Having done nothing for several weeks, blaming a mild calf problem, I had visions of humiliation, pain and generally falling at the first fence.

"On the entry form I optimistically put down my estimated finishing time at between one-and-a-half and two hours.

"Somehow I managed to get round the centre of London, and pounded down all 10km without stopping in one hour and 12 minutes."

Simon is planning to run the half marathon on September 22 but knows that there is a lot of hard work ahead.

"I have realised I can't give up now, much as I would like to, but it's going to be a case of gritting my teeth and getting back down to the gym and trying to approach that level of fitness I reached before I hit the wall of apathy and decided to enter a pie-eating marathon instead."
