The Morley Advertiser has escaped action from the Press Complaints Commission over a furore surrounding a story which led to the newspaper being stripped from the shelves by the publisher.

Some readers were outraged at comments which ran alongside a front page splash detailing how a gay sex mail order business had been running from an innocuous old woollen mill in the town.

The story was an attempt to represent the views of some local residents, the Advertiser said at the time, and did not reflect the views of the newspaper or its staff.

But a subsequent complaint to the PCC was settled without the commission taking any further action.

It heard evidence from the complainant and the newspaper, whose editor Bob Evans published many of the letters of outrage received from readers in the aftermath of the May article.

He said: "I replied to the PCC and gave our comments.

"The complainant agreed we had done all that we possibly could to rectify the matter."
