Lockwood launches sports paper

Danny Lockwood, publisher and editor of the Dewsbury & District Press, has launched a new rugby league newspaper.

The first issue of the League Weekly was published on Monday.

Danny, a former amateur rugby league player for Yorkshire and Great Britain, says he decided to launch the new title after being approached by a group of journalists who used to work on the former Johnston title Rugby Leaguer.

They left the Rugby Leaguer after the title was sold to League Publications Ltd, and merged with League Express.

Danny said: "All the staff who worked on the Rugby Leaguer - which was a profitable and well thought of publication - lost their jobs.

"Within two weeks we launched the League Weekly and the entire Rugby Leaguer team are now working on it.

"The first issue came out on Monday and it has been very well received."

The League Weekly is distributed in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire.
