As an editorial assistant with the Somerset County Gazette, Dawn Case often goes beyond the call of duty - but now she's gone way over the top.

With other volunteers she abseiled from the top of Taunton's Debenhams store to raise cash for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

The total raised was £18,500 - a record-breaking haul for the RNIB in Taunton.

The first Dawn knew about the abseil was when she saw a press release from the RNIB in the County Gazette offices.

She said: "I'd always wanted to abseil but never did anything about it, so I thought it was an ideal opportunity to have a go and raise money for charity. I had a lot of support from everyone at the County Gazette and raised £175."

Meanwhile, on the same day, County Gazette Editor-in-Chief Ken Bird was also doing his bit for charity.

Ken captained "England" in a World Cup-style football tournament in memory of an 11-year-old girl, who died of cancer recently. The event raised from than £1,000 for the children's ward at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and for the Children's Hospice South West.
