Retiring executive "made a difference"

Tributes have been made to publishing boss Peter Strong, who is retiring as chief executive of Archant.

His work during the past five years was recognized at the company's annual meeting, where chairman Richard Jewson said the company, formerly ECNG, had been unified during his tenure.

Richard said: "The role of chief executive is not an easy one but is pivotal to the success of any business.

"During the five years that Peter has been with us the business has become more diverse, more profitable and better managed. He was central to the acquisition of Home Counties Newspapers and has led us into the magazine arena and established Archant as a major publisher of county magazines.

"Peter's vision has created and unified the company under the Archant brand and the new values, and in his own words, he has made a difference."

Peter responded by saying: "This is a wonderful business in which to hold the privileged position I have.

"Moving to Norfolk and Archant has been a life changing experience for me and the people have been a delight to work with."

Chairman Mr Jewson made the comments as he announced a record operating profit for the company of £26.1m - up eight per cent on last year. Turnover, at £144m, was up ten per cent.

He told the meeting: "The management has no shortage of ideas for pushing the group forward and for using technology to increase efficiency and levels of customer service.

"We remain alert to the opportunities where we can use our financial strength to make acquisitions when we find opportunities to create value for shareholders."
