A journalist who has worked for The West Briton and sister paper the Cornish Guardian for 40 years has had his stalwart service recognised.

During his years on the Cornish papers, many as a motor writer, Nigel Salmon has reported on some of the county's most momentous events - including the Penlee Lifeboat tragedy, the Isles of Scilly helicopter crash and the Torrey Canyon oil pollution disaster.

An enthusiast of vehicles of all types, from tanks and tractors to Jaguars and Ferraris, his particular love is Land Rover.

To mark his 40 years of service, West Briton editor John Pearn presented Nigel with an ornate pewter sculpture of Land Rovers tackling an off-road course.

For the past ten years Nigel has worked as a sub-editor, first at The Cornishman, where he was also sports editor, and then at The West Briton.
