Echo columnist dies

Exeter Express & Echo writer Rev Walter Jacobson has died, aged 78.

One of Devon's best known churchmen, he wrote the Weekend Thought column for the Echo for 25 years.

He had fought a long battle with cancer, and his last column, written just days before his death, appeared in the Echo on Saturday.

Born in New Zealand, Walter came to Devon in 1957.

His grandfather and father were journalists and Walter worked as a sub-editor on the Echo for three years, later becoming a press officer for the Bishop of Exeter.
